The town of Ballinger was originally named Hutchins City, and was promoted by the Santa Fe railroad. It was named after John Ballinger, a distinguished Texas statesman. He helped establish Galveston’s defenses during the Mexican War, was appointed Confederate receiver of enemy alien property, and later was sent to negotiate peace in Texas. The town is now a thriving farm-ranch center with an annual rodeo and livestock show. A 20-year-old cowboy statue was sculpted by Pompeo Coppini and is the town’s centerpiece.
